Chapter Seventeen

Finn rolled out of bed, his ass still throbbing after yet another amazing night he and Zane had shared. He stood by the nightstand, rubbing his eyes and looking for his cell phone.

Zane stretched across most of the bed still asleep, and looking more like some clueless high school kid than the next big thing that was about to hit Nashville.

His evening out and about with the guy from Freedom Records must have been successful. He hadn’t said much about it, but what he did say sounded promising. Maybe now Zane could stop worrying so much about appearances, and get back to doing what he did best. Making music.

Finn dressed quickly. He still needed to pack and make sure Jack had everything together. His stomach grumbled as he shoved his foot into his boot. “Hey, babe.” He patted Zane on the shoulder. “Babe.”

Zane’s left eye cracked open a bit, and he scrunched his face. “Gees. What time is it?”

Finn checked his cell phone. “Seven-thirty.”

Zane collapsed back onto his pillow. “Shit. Why are you up so early?”

“We’re leaving for New Iberia. Remember?” He grabbed his wallet from the bedside table and shoved it into his back pocket. “Besides, I’m starving.”

Zane peeked up at him through one open eye. “You definitely worked up an appetite last night.”

Finn grinned, then bent and kissed Zane’s bare shoulder. “I’ll be back in a few.”

Zane pulled the blankets over his head and waved him away. “Be careful.”

Finn left the room and inhaled the crisp morning air with a deep cleansing breath. He could get used to this.

He found Jack already awake and watching the morning news. “Want something to eat? I’m running over to the donut shop for kolaches.”

“Sausage and cheese?” Jack didn’t look away from the television.

“Yeah.”

Jack nodded. His attention still glued to the news. “Okay.”

Finn stood there a few minutes observing his brother. Jack rarely paid attention to the news. “What are you watching?”

Jack glanced over. “They said something about a big car crash near Houston. The picture they showed of one of the people who died looked like Manny.”

The hair along Finn’s neck stood on end. “Manny?” Finn eased closer as his insides snarled. “The Manny you gave the money to?” Holy shit! Nino was telling the truth. Manny is dead.

“Yeah, but I don’t think it’s gonna show it again.”

“Why would they show Houston news here?”

“There were two cars. One car clipped the other when it spun out of control, and hit a tree or something. The woman in the other car was someone important from Baton Rouge.”

Finn’s fingers twitched and his head boomed from the crazy thoughts bombarding his already cluttered mind. What the hell was Nino thinking? Had he actually caused the death of an innocent person? Deep down, Finn knew Nino was capable. After all, they’d rushed to leave town based on that belief. The fear alone was bad enough, but this? This changed everything. Now more than ever Finn had to pay Nino back.

Jack couldn’t find out. That much he knew for sure.
